The Mane Center was founded in 1985 and has evolved with the significant advances in neurological and holistic sciences over the past 25 years. Neurology is the science of the nerves and nervous system especially of the diseases affecting them. The nervous system starts with the brain and includes the spinal cord, the nerves and receptors which are responsible for your sense of sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, position sense and balance. The 90’s was the decade of the brain. During the 90’s significant research was done in understanding more about the brain, how it functions, how it develops and how it influences our overall health and well being. At The Mane Center, we have spent the past 25 years understanding the science and more importantly applying the science to achieve the best results for the health of our patients. Understanding and applying how the brain and nervous system works, how the nervous systems influences the body as well as what the nervous system needs from the body in order to stay healthy allows us to achieve results in patients with conditions from ADHD, learning disabilities, neuropathy, diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, balance disorders, movement disorders and autism among others. We use the application of the science to optimize the overall health for our patients including to maintain health for longevity and quality of life.
The functional neurologist uses this knowledge of neuroscience in a non invasive (no drugs or surgery) way to formulate a treatment plan utilizing the science of neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change itself) that will typically include different exercises and stimulations to the nervous system in order to make brain changes in a positive way. He will also determine if there is any interference with the nervous systems need for fuel (oxygen and glucose) and activation as well as determine that there are not any negative systems such as the immune system or detoxification system that could affect the nervous system in a negative way. This may be as simple as screening patient with neuropathy for diabetes or screening a movement disorder patient for liver function to ensure that the cause of a movement disorder is not hepatoencephalopathy. Functional Neurology may be especially beneficial when the imaging studies are negative and yet the patient still has symptoms. Structural lesions such as tumors and strokes can be seen on MRI’s but functional lesion may not be (the wires are there but they are not transmitting signals appropriately. Medical Neurologist treat with medications while functional neurologist treat as mentioned above by using different stimulation to the brain including things such as lights, color, smells, vibration, different frequency sounds, and balance and coordination exercise. Neurosurgeons treat by doing surgery. Functional neurology is often preferred by patients as there are no side effects from medication or consequences from surgery. Many times Functional Neurologist will serve as a consultant to other physicians.
We are constantly upgrading our ability to “get the patient better.” After a thorough history and examination we use the appropriate combination of functional neurology, functional medicine, biomechanical correction, Spinal Decompression and Laser Therapy in order to achieve the optimum improvement in your health.
