Ever wondered how natural gases are produced from the earth and what the effects are on the health of the population? Fracking is a technique used to force gases and oil from shale rock.  Frackers drill down into the earth and force a high pressure water mixture into the rock to recover these natural resources.
It was shown that people living near natural gas developments are up to 4x more likely to have an asthma attack or asthma related episode. Recently a study released in JAMA Internal Medicine classified asthma into 3 categories; mild, moderate, and severe. These 3 levels of severity are all affected by fracking in 3 different ways. the first is that it releases ozone, a powerful irritant, to the atmosphere at ground level.asthma

This can increase temperatures and speed up climate change in the area causing exacerbation of asthma sufferers symptoms. Near these fracking sites there is increased industrial activities that can potential asthma and is compared to constantly breathing in industrial pollutants.  A scary thought is that the nearby environment is not the only area affected by these activities as these gases and oils must be transported through pipelines to other facilities and its no secret that pipelines leak and can contaminate local water supplies. This creates the possible reach of some of these risks to be a much wider radius than even this study investigated.

Medical News Daily reports that a new study of outcomes combining Western and Chinese studies shows that acupuncture may improve memory in patients suffering Dementia.
For those not familiar with its practice, Acupuncture is an alternative medicine practice involving small needles being inserted into specific parts of the body usually to relieve muscle tension and pain. acupuncture
Fox News reported “Neurologists analyzed two types of studies including one that compared acupuncture directly to nimopipine, which is a calcium blocker that treats a gene mutation associated with dementia, and another that measured the effect of acupuncture when combined with nimodipine.” Studies showed that acupuncture had significant positive effects on Mini-Mental State Exams showing improved scores. Nothing has been shown to stop the development of Dementia but it seems that the combination of medication and acupuncture can help patients retain a greater amount of memory capabilities. Dr. Sam Gandy, director of the Center for Cognitive Health at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City says that “I tend to believe some holistic interventions when properly executed.”

He thinks that there may be potential for increased alertness and mental state from acupuncture but without independently replicating these studies than he cannot say whether it is any better for patients than meditation.

Children’s brains do not reach full maturity until around the age of 25 depending on the person and anything that may halt, slow, or change developmental processes can really affect a child’s life. These can include factors such as drug use (prescription and recreational), head injuries, and emotional abuse.

Recently the movie Concussion has brought a lot of attention to head injuries and how sports organizations like the NFL are handling these issues. Parents nowadays are much more aware of the dangers of head injuries as well as being more concerned about their child’s safety. i9 is a youth sports organization that recently surveyed its over a million participants. They have found that a huge concern of modern parents is their child getting a concussion and how it may affect they’re development. 537/537 parents said that their child was in some way affected by a concussion during a youth sports event or practice. This is concerning as it can change your child’s performance in school, their personality, and even their progress socially. head injuries

A University of Massachusetts poll recently surveyed Americans showing that 78% of them feel contact sports, tackle football in particular, are not safe before the age of 14. The sad part is that a lot of youth athletes feel injuries such as these are almost like battle scars and are proud because they feel it makes them more “tough” or “macho”.

This is ingrained in children’s mentalities just as much as football is ingrained in the culture of the United States especially in Southeastern states like Florida, Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma. As a parent its difficult to make the decision of allowing your child to play contact sports; they beg you to play and you want them to join the other kids but your worried about the state of their health both mental and physical.

For men over 40 the worst part of the year is going to get your yearly physical. This entails blood tests, a thorough examination, and the worst part is the prostate exam this entails both a rectal examination and analysis of specific protein produced by the prostate.prostate exam
This exam is often put off and avoided by many men. A new study shows that over the past decade the percentage of rise in men for prostate cancer is at an alarming 72% increase. This study was published in the Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases Journal by Nature. Another alarming finding is that the level of PSA (prostate specific antigen) had nearly doubled in 2013 meaning that men are being diagnosed after further progression of the cancer than in 2004.
This has lead many experts to believe the aggressiveness of this form of cancer has increased and is continuing to grow. Although these findings may be alarming the good news is that prostate cancer very rarely spreads before being caught by the diagnosing physician.
The study found that only 3% of cases had spread to other parts of the body or in medical terms become “metastatic”. Dr Edward Schaeffer the lead for this study is adamant that “PSA screening and Rectal Exams save lives”. For men in the United States Prostate Cancer presents a large health risk and without proper and regular testing and examination can lead to issues of impotence, incontinence, and death.

This type of cancer is extremely common with 240,000 men being diagnosed every year and 30,000 lives being claimed just in the United States. Men, please be sure to get your yearly physicals including these exams, it just may save your life!

Although in prior generations cigarette smoking was prevalent among teens, it seems that it is evolving into a new form of consuming a tobacco like substance.
Vaping is the new trend among teens.  Although Vaping originally began as a less harmful method for smokers to ween themselves away from cigarettes and smoking all together it has become an epidemic among the younger crowd.  E-cigarettes come in many different forms ranging from cigarette style devises to hand held boxes called “mods”.  Although they do not cause combustion of any substance and do not directly contain tobacco, they work through other means.

vaping dangers

There are risks associated with vaping

Vaporizers use a high powered battery to heat up what is essentially vegetable oil (Vegetable Glycerin) until it creates a gas that is inhaled by the user.  The oil or “juice” as it is referred to by users, contains flavoring and in most cases nicotine.  These flavors can be food based, tobacco type, or imitate candy flavors which is how the industry is making them to appeal to the younger crowd.   Just like the tobacco industry did with flavored cigars and cloves cigarettes.  These products have been developed to hopefully see a decline in tobacco use, but instead what we have seen is more and more teens have begun to vape, who would have never smoked in the first place.  As well as smokers who continue to consume tobacco products while vaping.  These e-cigs have not made a dent in conventional cigarette use according to a study by the University of Southern California, but the nicotine rate is on the rise. Through smoking, vaping, and smokeless tobacco products the nicotine use rate has gone up. Instead of having replaced smokers with vapers, a whole new culture has been created including “cloud chasing” competitions, vaping expo’s, and the recent combination of vape/coffee shops which are exempt from the indoor smoking policies in most areas. This is largely a “trend” as many teens see it as harmless and cool. The issue is that if a teen gets hooked on vaping they are at greater risk of becoming cigarette smokers.

Vaping is not risk free.   Any foreign matter introduced into the bodies airways can cause irritation.  Nicotine an ingredient in most of these juices, is a toxin to the body and disrupts the way the brain functions through neurotransmitters transmission especially in the still developing brain of those under 25.  These liquids can contain powerful solvents, formaldehyde, and other controversial ingredients that pose potential health risks. The biggest issue is that this industry is not regulated.  Besides the typical laws in the United States about purchasing these products at a certain age, there is no quality control or FDA testing done on these products. Many originating from China with little participation by the United States which causes a large concern about lead and heavy metal contamination.

We all know that with heavier weight comes more health issues, but exactly how dangerous is it? Well, if years off of your life are a big deal then it may be time to make a change. Being severely obese can cost you as much as 8 years of your life.
The Associated Press reported “Overweight people die one year earlier and moderately obese people die on average 3 years earliefast food contributes to weight gainr than expected.” Although smoking is the cause of almost 25% of deaths in North America, Obesity leads closely behind with about 17% of premature deaths. Obesity leads to many ailments such as High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease, Stroke, Kidney Disease, and Diabetes.
According to a study published on TheLancet.com Obesity has been linked to premature death. Obesity is becoming a larger health problem every year worldwide. In this study a group called The Global BMI Mortality Collaboration found 10,625,411 non-smokers without history of chronic illness or disease from several different populations worldwide to include in this paper and sorted through nearly 4 million participants to come to some astonishing conclusions. For clarification purposes being overweight is being heavier than what is considered healthy while obesity is the condition of having excess body fat and a BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 30.
This study found that on 4 continents both being either overweight or obese is linked to premature death. It also shows that about 1 in 5 deaths (in North America) could be avoided, this is the highest out of the 4 continents studied. With BMI increasing globally this means that the issues here in North America could soon become the global norm. This study has shown that men have higher insulin resistance, more liver fat, and greater type 2 diabetes prevalence. It seems that more women than men were used for this study indicating that statistics may be skewed to show that women have higher mortality rate than men. The caveat to this is that age specific death rates are higher in men by about 50% compared to women which means that obesity is 3 times more deadly for men than it is for women. This coincides with efforts encouraging the population to become more physically active and nourish themselves with healthy foods. It has also been shown throughout medical history that people suffering from obesity are more likely to be plagued by back pain, joint pain, and muscle strains. As a community this information needs to be spread to help combat excess adipose tissue especially in our children to correct these mistakes before handing them down to our future generations.

The medical term for painful menstrual periods is dysmenorrhea. Many women have painful periods. Sometimes, the pain makes it difficult to perform normal daily activities such as jobs or school-related activities for a few days during each menstrual cycle. Painful menstruation is the leading cause of lost time from school and work among women in their teens and 20s. There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea.

Primary dysmenorrhea is the pain that comes from having a menstrual period, or menstrual cramps. It is usually caused by natural chemicals called prostaglandins and normally occurs before or in the beginning of the menstrual cycle, as the amount of prostaglandins increase in the uterus. Also, primary dysmenorrhea begins soon after a girl starts having menstrual periods.accupuncture menstrual pain

Secondary is caused by a disorder in the reproductive system. It may begin later in life than primary dysmenorrhea. The pain often lasts longer than normal menstrual cramps. Some conditions that cause secondary dysmenorrhea: Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, and Fibroids.
Pain relievers, such as anti-inflamatory (NSAIDs), and hormones are frequently prescribed by doctors to treat dysmenorrhea.

Also, acupuncture has been shown to be helpful in relieving dysmenorrhea. Recently, a study about oriental medicine applied in patients suffering from dysmenorrhea showed that auricular acupressure effectively increases parasympathetic activity to maintain autonomic function homeostasis in young women with primary dysmenorrhea alleviating menstrual pain and menstrual distress in a high-stress life.

Auricular acupressure is one of the most effective and accessible alternative treatment for reducing pain. It is also commonly used in treatments such as lowering blood pressure, shedding unwanted pounds, alleviating insomnia, and correcting alcohol addiction.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. With insomnia, you usually awaken feeling unrefreshed, which takes a toll on your ability to function during the day. Insomnia can affect not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life.
According to the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research at the National Institutes of Health, about 30-40% of adults say they have some symptoms of insomnia within a given year, and about 10-15 percent of adults say they have chronic insomnia. People who have trouble sleeping every night without exception for months or years are fairly rare. More often, people experience chronic-intermittent insomnia, which means difficulty sleeping for a few nights, followed by a few nights of adequate sleep before the problem returns.
Moreover, a recent research in Taiwan reviewed that young adults with insomnia may be up to eight times more likely to suffer a stroke than those who have no trouble sleeping.acupuncture tampa
There are two types of insomnia: primary insomnia and secondary insomnia.
Primary insomnia: Primary insomnia means that a person is having sleep problems that are not directly associated with any other health condition or problem.
Secondary insomnia: Secondary insomnia means that a person is having sleep problems because of something else, such as a health condition (like asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, or heartburn); pain; medication they are taking; or a substance they are using (like alcohol).
Treatment for insomnia usually involves nonmedical therapy, such as developing better sleep habits or psychotherapy, and medications. For instance, Benzodiazepine sedatives such as Halcion, Restoril, ProSom, Dalmane, and Ativan and non-benzodiazepine sedatives such as Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata are drugs that can help induce sleep.
As an alternative therapeutic method, acupuncture offers another option for insomnia. It is based on the theory of meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Meridian is considered to be a network of passages of the energy power, Qi. According to ancient TCM classic of Nei Jing (Inner Classic), insomnia is a consequence of the vicious cycle of “daytime low-spirit” and “nighttime hyperarousal state.” Acupuncture is considered to be beneficial to restore the normal sleep-wake cycle by regulating and restoring the natural flow of Qi.
Recently, a study about the efficacy about acupuncture in cases of primary insomnia showed that this alternative method was more effective than some drugs in cases of primary insomnia.
Further evidence suggests that acupuncture may improve not just sleep duration, but also quality. One study, conducted by researchers from China’s Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and published in the Chinese Medical Journal in 2009, found that four courses of electro-acupuncture therapy led to significant improvements in sleep quality (including REM sleep and slow wave sleep time) and in daytime social function.

A key component for a physician who is evaluating a car accident victim is to assess any changes/difficulties in activities of daily living. Examples of activities of daily living include things such as: going to church, dancing, shopping, cooking, doing the laundry, brushing your hair, taking care of the baby, washing the car, doing yard work, working out and driving. Loss of function may equate to physical impairment and disability. car accident chiropractor

If a right handed carpenter were to lose his left little finger in a car accident, he would be impaired but not disabled. If a right handed concert pianist were to lose his left little finger in a car accident, he would be disabled.

This same concept relates to driving. An impaired ability to drive would disable a truck driver and/or taxi driver. The point is, it is not only the injury that is important but also how that injury has affected your life.

A recent study in the American journal of physical medicine and rehabilitation found that driving, a very common activity of daily living is indeed impaired in patients with whiplash associated disorders. Drivers with whiplash associated disorders had greater absolute path of head rotation in a simulated city area and use greater mental effort. Patient complaints of difficulties with activities of daily living at scientific validity and should be included in the proper evaluation of any car accident patient involved in a medical legal situation.

The second most common complaint after car accident is headache. As there are different types of headaches and they are located in different areas such as the frontal area, the temporal area and the occipital area (the back of the head) many times these symptoms get confused. Problems with your temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your skull with your jaw, are common after an accident but many times the temporomandibular joint is not evaluated.

Symptoms related to a temporomandibular joint syndrome include headaches, pain in the temporal area, locking and clicking of the jaw, difficulty chewing, pain about the face or ear, as well as dizziness and ringing in the ears. A recent study in the medical literature entitled “The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders in patients with late whiplash syndrome who experience orofacial pain: A case-control series study. Supports the fact that temporomandibular joint syndrome is more common in patients with a history of whiplash associated disorders.

Therefore, if you have been a car accident and are having persistent headaches that do not seem to be improving with your current treatment regimen. Make sure that an evaluation of your temporomandibular joint is considered to see if this is the cause or a contributing factor relating to your headaches.
